[Review] Kurokami (Black God)

I'd form a contract with her.
If you know what I mean.
I'll start off with saying: this is an Anime, not some religious post. The name, "Kurokami" literally translates to "Black God," however, the main character is named Kuro (Black). So you get the picture there? Kay.

Here's the real start of the review: the two main characters are Kuro (the chick above), who is a "Mototsumitama" (Tera Guardian), and Keita, who is a human that is her contractee. As shown in the above screenshot is her telling him that. Keita's been dragged into this mess by meeting Kuro and unwillingly forming a contract with her, because he was pretty much dead, and she revived him by forming a contract. This happened in episode one and two, so I don't count it as a spoiler. Lastly, he seems to not realize that he'd be dead otherwise if it were not for the contract, yet still is hesitant about helping her and shit. Stupid main character is stupid.

There were three main problems I had with this series:
  1. Lack of Proper Communication - One of the biggest problems I have with some Anime is how the main villain or whatever doesn't tell anyone anything. Like, the whole story could be shortened to less than 50% of what it is if they just explained the shit they explained near the end, but at the beginning.
  2. Emotional Distress - The characters were always fucking emotionally unstable. They were always distressed about something, preventing them from using their full power or whatever. The hell is that all about?
  3. Typical Shounen Bullshit - It'd be a huge spoiler if I were to elaborate on my entire reasoning behind this, but I'm sure you'd get what I mean without it all. The main characters are complete bullshit. Throughout the series, you encounter really strong people, allies or enemies, and the main characters seem to be fucking stronger, even though in reality, their power is stupid. No.
Then, there were three not so big problems, but still problems:
  1. "Synchro Transformation" - In the words of my friend complaining about "Darker than Black: Ryuusei no Gemini," "Every fucking time she summoned her magical anti tank rifle, they had to go through the whole 'Sailor Moon'-esque sequence to show it getting summoned." Now, in Kurokami, they went through the whole "SYNCHRO" sequence almost every time as well. It gets old, but was more enjoyable than Darker than Black's tank rifle one, though.
  2. Foreshadowing - The series did a decent job with foreshadowing, but they made it too easy to guess what was going to happen. Like, in a whole episode, the main male character, Keita, would be all like, "I can't get this off my mind... I can't..." and with the trail of events happening, you already know what he's distressed about is related to what is about to fucking happen.
  3. Lack of Participation - Keita's grandfather is a martial artist or whatever. Keita knows some of it, and at one point in the series, he was practicing/training or whatever. Why hasn't he actually fought? I feel like they added the grandfather for no reason. Hell, he was "practicing" for no reason, then.
My absolute favorite characters: Steiner and Excel. And like, of course I don't
expect Excel to fight. She's too adorable, even with her mature personality.
Moving on,
  • Season Count: 1
  • Episode Count: 23 + OVA
  • Presentation/Appearance - 4/5
    • I think my favorite thing about this was that they mostly fought with fists and had a "street fight" feel to it. Like, actual punching. Of course, there came a point where it was mostly just a whole bunch of lines and dashes representing the characters' super speed, which is bullshit and lazy animation, but still. The first episode's fight definitely topped any other, as they didn't use the whole "dashed background sequence" that much (screenshot below). Other than that, it was a decent 2008 animation style.
I just liked this part, though, there are more vivid dashed background things.
I forgot what it's called, so correct me if you know!
  • Characters - 3/5
    • As I said above, they were always too emotionally distressed. Especially the main characters. They never thought, "oh shit, instead of worrying about my partner dying, I should get my shit straight or we'll die re-fucking-gardless!"
  • Plot/Story/Genre (Action and Drama) - 4/5
    • I'd have to say it was a decently well thought out series. Other than the shit that I complained about, the general plot wasn't so bad. The idea of "Tera" being in everyone (which is basically "Chi," something we're more familiar with) was pretty neat. Aside from that, I liked how the series' story actually progressed through time. Like, it didn't take ten episodes to finish one battle or some event. It took less than an episode to.
  • Music/Sound - 4/5
    • The opening themes was pretty neat, in that it's kind of catchy. Though, not as good as Ben-To's opening. Aside from that, the background music they use for the most part is awesome.
  • Final Verdict - 3.5/5
    • Lowest score so far, because the five problems I had killed it for it. The animation wasn't so superior as to make me think, "A-grade Anime right here!" All in all, it had things many modern Anime actually lack now. Specifically, many action Anime: some good ol' classic fighting. I don't need motherfuckers flying in the air and shit. Though, like I said, the series did reach a point where they used less of the classic action. Still, they used it. Good for it!
Not the best screenshot, but the truck was moving fast.
There is a lot of people dying in accidents. A lot.
So, how's using actual screenshots? Is it better to use screenshots or images from outside sources? The last one I used omitted from your opinions, please. That one was only terrible because of the event that was occurring.

SPOILER ALERT:
Keita dies at least fucking twice in this series, but comes back to life each and every time. Fuck. This isn't Dragonball Z, guys.

  1. I personally don't like the whole revival of main character deal. It just makes the series kind of cheesy and if I feel connected to the main character and he/she dies, it makes it more successful to me because I enjoy little twists here and there. I also don't like series where male characters have "Ke/Kei" as the first(two)hiragana sounds in their name. It's just something else that bothers me. It seems like it would be a neat anime, though. Nice review.

    1. I agree! It was cool when Goku did it like the first time. But after that, it's like, "okay, really?" And now that you've mentioned it, the whole "Ke/Kei" thing might apply to me, too. It pissed me off hearing his name all the time. Aside from him, and the few cons, I would say this is worth the watch. The classic punch-and-kick action was the greatest thing about this.
